Having problems? The fix is here

Google rolls out Pixel 8 and 7 update to finally fix their cellular network issues

Google Pixel 8 is one of the phones to receive the fix

Another software update is rolling out to several of the latest Pixel phones, including the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 7, and brings a fix for users experiencing issues connecting to cellular networks.

As reported by 9to5Google, the update is available to download for the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, and Google Pixel Fold. However, at the time of writing, only Verizon customers have received the new software over-the-air when it comes to US Pixel owners.

It’s just a small update, less than 7MB in size, and it’s the second one released for Pixels in April. According to Verizon’s changelogs, the patch “provides performance improvements for LTE call/data issues and network issues.”

If you don’t see the update on your phone, you can download the images directly – there are links on 9to5Google. However, updating manually requires some technical knowledge and can brick your phone if not done properly, so unless you’re sure you know what you’re doing, it’s best to wait for the notification.

Life of a bug

The Pixel 7a was also affected.

It’s hard to say how widespread these issues have been, with Reddit posts suggesting the problems may have started after the March 2024 update for Pixel devices, though of course no signal is a frustrating experience for most phone owners from time to time.

According to Android Police, some users found that they were not receiving text messages and calls, and incoming calls were being sent straight to voicemail. This seems to have affected a lot of people in different countries and on different carrier networks.

The good news is that the latest software patch appears to be working – at least according to this Reddit thread. “So far so good with calls and texts, will continue to monitor,” commented one user who manually updated their device.

When you’re trying to market your devices as some of the best phones on the market, companies can get away with these kinds of problems, although it’s fair to say that Apple and Samsung aren’t immune to them. At least this particular set of problems appears to have been resolved in fairly short order.
