The year 2024 started quietly for Sony, which is normally busy. According to SonyAlphaRumors, the company expects to resume normal operations in the second half of the year, with the launch of several exciting new cameras equipped with the E-mount system. At this stage, details are scant, but we do know that there will be two full-frame cameras using the E-Mount, one of which won’t be a successor to the flagship A1 model. According to rumors from Sony Alpha, this model is not expected to release this year. Leaving aside the potential A 1 II for now, let’s look at what we can reasonably expect in the second half of 2023. It’s assumed that one model will be a full frame Sony Alpha camera, and the other will be a movie camera.
Sony A7V or Sony A7SV?
The current full-frame cameras in the Alpha series that are expected to be released by Sony within their usual time frame are the Sony A7IV and the Sony A6100. We still consider the former to be one of the best mirrorless cameras available, with great versatility, and the latter has long been our favorite camera for recording 4K video. However, the A7III is now outdated, although it still has many great features, and newer models like the Sony ZV-1 have emerged with new technologies such as image stabilization and artificial intelligence-based framing tools. The need for a camera specifically designed for video recording, such as a successor to the Sony A9 III, is not very strong, given that Sony recently released the FX3 as part of its lineup of movie cameras. The FX3 has many of the same features as the A9 III when it comes to video recording but also has a more camera-centric design, including a cooling fan, handle with XLR connections, and other features that make it better suited for video production.If your main purpose is to shoot video, the FX3 may be a better choice than the A7S III, despite being about 25% more expensive. However, it’s possible that Sony still believes there is a demand for both camera models.
For us, the most promising model for release this year would be Sony’s A7V. It would sit below Sony’s current flagship model, the A7R IV. This camera will be a significant upgrade from the A7 III, adding several new features. These include AI autofocus, a powerful processor, and improved video recording capabilities. We don’t know if Sony will need to increase the photo resolution to 33 megapixels, but we think it’s a good idea to make sure the camera can handle high-resolution images. Given that the A7 series has been successful, it seems likely that Sony will continue to innovate in this area.
Full-frame movie camera FX.
Full-frame movie cameras from Sony are expected to be released in 2024. SonyAlphaRumors are more confident about the new camera model, FX, which is expected to be announced later this year, than they are about the new Alpha camera based on rumors. If the new FX camera proves to be a successor to Sony’s FX3, it may have similar video recording capabilities to the potential Sony A7S IV camera if Sony believes there will be demand for both cameras.
Currently, the A7S III and FX3 cameras are equipped with 12-megapixel sensors and the ability to record 4K video at up to 120 frames per second. These cameras provide excellent performance in low-light conditions and have been popular among independent filmmakers in recent years. They are reliable in most scenarios.
The most significant update to the FX3 series is a higher-resolution sensor, which will allow users to record 6K or even 8K videos. This may come at the cost of image quality in low-lights, but it will provide an impressive upgrade nonetheless. There is also the possibility of another FX model being released in the future, such as the X6 or FS9. This model could target the high-end professional market or be designed for other purposes such as higher resolution video recording. Whatever the case may be, we look forward to seeing what the next generation of FX cameras has in store.
