Mobile medical service DocGo confirms it suffered a major cyberattack

Hackers have stolen sensitive health data from DocGo, a medical transportation and telemedicine company. In a recent cyberattack, the company experienced a security breach that resulted in the loss of sensitive health information. In a 8-K filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), DocGo disclosed that it had identified a security incident involving certain aspects of its systems. As soon as the incident came to light, DocGo followed the usual course of action: launching an investigation, engaging external cybersecurity experts for analysis, and alerting relevant authorities. At this time, it is unclear whether the company was required to suspend its systems or interrupt its regular operations as a result of the incident. An ongoing inquiry is underway to ascertain the full extent of the intrusion and the measures taken to address it.

The subsequent investigation revealed that the assailants accessed and exfiltrated certain information from the company’s information technology infrastructure. This included certain protected health data from a limited number of medical records within the company’s US-based ambulance transportation service. So far, it has not been determined exactly what kind of health data was accessed or how many people were affected. DocGo has stated that it has initiated notifying those impacted. As the investigation into the matter continues, the results may yet change. However, at present, there is no indication that any other business units have been affected by the incident. Likewise, there is also no evidence to suggest that the perpetrators are still active within the network or that stolen data has been misused elsewhere. Furthermore, there is currently no indication of any significant impact on the organization as a result of the incident.

Given that the hacking group has yet to claim responsibility for the attack, it remains unclear whether this constituted a ransomware incident or a mere data breach. More recently, ransomware actors have begun abandoning the encryption aspect of their operations, focusing instead on data extraction. It appears that developing, maintaining, and implementing encryption technologies is proving to be too costly and time-consuming, and demanding payment in exchange for access to data appears to be a more lucrative approach.
