The latest quarterly data from Canalys reveals a healthy boost in the tablet market. In Q1 2024, there was a 1% year-over-year growth after four consecutive quarters of shrinking market. During the first three months of 2024, analyst firm recorded 33.7 million tablet shipments, slightly higher than 33.4 million in the previous quarter.
This increase in shipments can be attributed to new entrants entering the market. Apple’s market share decreased from 42% to 36%, but it’s still selling tablets. Think of a tablet and you probably think “iPad,” but without any new models released since October 2022, Apple’s shipments decreased by around 14%.Canalys Research Manager, Himani Mukka, commented on the positive start to the year for the tablet market. Despite the extended period of cautious consumer spending on tablets, vendors have remained ambitious, he said. New market entrants continue to invest in the category, while the traditional heavyweights are focusing on innovation to excite customers and create new use cases.
One notable development that Mukka highlighted is Apple’s anticipated introduction of OLED technology in its high-end iPad models, such as the Pro series. After a period of silence, Apple is expected to launch new iPad models at its May 7 “Let Loose” event.
Mukka also suggested that foldable designs and 3D content without eyewear could be a focus for tablet makers in 2024, alongside 5G connectivity.Overall, the tablet market has experienced a challenging period, but these early signs of recovery, combined with the lower price point of tablets compared to PCs in today’s challenging economic climate, could lead to continued growth in future quarters.
