The past was and the future will be wonderful
this week Apple placed the iPhone 6 Plus on the dreaded “obsolete” list. This means your iconic big-screen phone will no longer receive any iOS updates, and there will be no service, no new parts, and no smiling Genius Bar representatives trying to help you extend your battery life.
Since Apple has discontinued these devices (and is preparing to discontinue them on the iPhone 6, iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus, which are currently on Apple’s partially supported “retro list”), I decided to take another look at how the iPhone revolutionized the our perception.

Apple’s 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus dwarfs the new curved 4.7-inch iPhone 6 The iPhone 6 Plus, at 6.22 inches tall and 3 inches wide (but just 7.1mm thick), is so large it requires new features and marked the beginning of the era of “phablets” (from “phone-tablet”).
It’s so big that Apple had to invent a new control mode called Accessibility, in which you double-tap the Home button (yes, it’s still there) and the top half of the screen slides down so you can easily reach thumb up to her. The accessibility feature still exists, but you can now access it by placing your finger directly above the Dock and swiping down.
When people first saw the iPhone 6 Plus in person, they were shocked and even “put off” until they picked up the 6.07-ounce phone.
It all sounds a little funny now, as was the case with the 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus and 6.8-inch Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, but at the time it was a really big deal. In my review for Mashable, I noted that when people first saw the iPhone 6 Plus in person, they were shocked and even “put off” until they picked up the 6.07-ounce phone (compared to our current 7.09-ounce flashlight ) ounce iPhone 15 Plus). They were amazed that they were holding and using the largest iPhone screen ever.
We’ve been using iPhones for seven years at this point, and many of us are used to carrying our phones in our back pockets. Typical size is 4.8 inches. For example, the iPhone 5 has a body size of 2.31 inches and 7.6 mm, which makes it possible to squeeze it between a chair and your butt. It turns out the biggest question is whether the much larger iPhone 6 Plus, which is just 7.1mm thick, can withstand the same pressure.
short answer: yes. The vast majority of iPhone 6 Plus owners (and iPhone 6 owners) have been using their phones for years without any problems. But there is a small group of people who have different experiences, but they are loud and stand out.
Apple made it clear at the time that these were edge cases at best, but it’s also worth noting that the iPhone 6s Plus is 0.2mm thicker than its predecessor.
however, iPhone 6 Plus has some great innovations that usher in a new era of iPhone. From the placement of the power/sleep button (which has been moved from the top of the phone to where it’s easier to reach) to the many changes to the iOS 8 interface (landscape orientation, response to notifications on the lock screen) and the moon slowing down twice as fast
The iPhone 6 Plus also takes advantage of Apple’s tendency to add qualifiers to feature names, so “Retina Display” becomes “Retina HD Display”, adding more pixels. Interestingly, Apple still calls its rear camera “iSight Camera” – a must-have optical branding that has thankfully disappeared from subsequent iPhones.
What’s important about the iPhone 6 Plus and its Phablt size is that it cemented our interest in, and ultimately our love for, large-screen smartphones. The most popular iPhones today typically measure at least 6.7 inches, and there are rumors that the iPhone 16 Pro Max could measure 6.9 inches. Yes, almost a 7-inch iPhone, which reminds me a lot of a phablet.”
Rest in peace iPhone 6 Plus. You’ve stood the test of time, captivated a generation of smartphone owners, and laid the foundation for the future of the big-screen iPhone.
