MythBuster: It’s nice, but not particularly effective.

Does closing apps on your iPhone save battery life? The surprising answer is no – here's why

Most of us tend to close Айфон apps away from the center of the home screen. This is often based on the assumption that forcing apps to close is sure to squeeze more power out of the battery and improve performance. But is it necessary to close them at all?

Surprisingly, the answer is no. Apple’s own guide to closing apps states that “you should only close an app if it’s not responding.” And there’s a good reason for this: iOS has long been designed so that background apps barely touch your Айфон’s RAM or processor.

A few years ago, Apple’s Craig Federighi (Senior Vice President of Software Engineering) even weighed in on the topic to dispel this myth. Here’s what he had to say, plus a technical explanation so you can impress your Айфон-owning friends with your knowledge…

Myth: Closing apps on Айфон will extend battery life

Closing Айфон apps is both cathartic and instinctively feels like the right thing to do if your battery is low. But it won’t actually extend the life of your battery, RAM, or processor, and opening and reopening apps may even have a negative impact.

Apple’s Senior Vice President of Engineering Craig Federighi even commented on this topic a few years ago. According to a 2016 MacRumors report, a reader emailed Tim Cook directly to get a definitive answer to the app’s closure and claimed to have received Federighi’s response.

The email asked, “Do you frequently exit multitasking iOS apps and is this necessary to extend battery life?” Craig’s response was short and to the point, saying “no and no” before thanking the sender of the email for being an Apple customer.

Does closing apps on your iPhone save battery life? The surprising answer is no – here's why

The usual method for closing apps is to pull your thumb up from the bottom of your Айфон screen and then release it to open the app carousel. You can then close apps by swiping up. But this should only be done if the application is not responding.

While we haven’t seen the letter directly, MacRumors reported that the headers of the letter have been verified. And Apple’s subsequent advice on closing apps has always confirmed this, with its core guidance stating that “you should only close an app if it’s not responding.”

Of course, since then, iPhones have constantly increased the amount of RAM: from 128 MB to 8 GB. And modern applications are also more demanding than in 2016. But most background apps in iOS are simply suspended or frozen, freeing up RAM they would otherwise be using.

Why doesn’t this help?

iOS is very effective at suspending unused apps – then effectively freezing those apps in the background. Suspended apps don’t actually impact your battery or performance. The fact that you can still see them by swiping up from the bottom of the home screen is just a visual indicator letting you know that they have recently been opened and are ready to resume when needed.

Although it seems counterintuitive, it’s often better to save battery to just leave apps alone until you need them. This is because closing apps only to open them again later is often more battery intensive than simply leaving them paused in the background.

Does closing apps on your iPhone save battery life? The surprising answer is no – here's why

The initial launch of most applications requires a brief increase in power to load and collect application data. An app suspended in the background simply uses less power, although apps like Spotify, Apple Music, or GPS navigation may continue to consume some power if they’re still being actively used in the background.

If you suspect an app is draining your battery, you can check by going to Settings > Battery and scrolling down to Battery Usage by App. To stop an app from running in the background, you can also go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and disable the specific app.

The best way to keep your Айфон running smoothly is to simply uninstall unused apps and regularly delete or copy large files from your Айфон. While there’s something undeniably nice about closing apps, remember that it’s unlikely to improve your Айфон’s battery life or performance (and may even have the opposite effect).
