Google is collecting its own security superteam to track the latest threats — and no surprises, AI take the fore

At the RSA Conference 2024, Google presented its Threat Intelligence solution, which draws on the knowledge and expertise of its Mandiant and VirusTotal divisions to provide current information on potential threats. This solution is supported by the Gemini AI platform from Google, which conducts thorough and rapid analyses of potential dangers and alerts customers worldwide. For decades, threat intelligence solutions have faced two major challenges: a lack of a comprehensive understanding of the threat landscape, and the need for organizations to invest time, resources, and effort in collecting and analyzing data in order to derive value from it.

Google Cloud, in a recent blog post, explains how its security infrastructure protects over 4 billion devices and 1.5 billion email accounts, blocking over 100 million attempted phishing attacks every day. This provides a wealth of information on current and emerging threats and attack tactics. This effort is complemented by the work of Google’s incident response teams and security consultants, who closely monitor threat actor groups and their activities for any changes in behavior that may indicate a new threat or tactic.

In addition, Google benefits from the contributions of its global network of more than one million users on the VirusTotal platform, who provide real-time intelligence on potential threat indicators such as files, URLs, etc. This crowdsourced intelligence helps to provide a more complete picture of the threat landscape. The new platform also incorporates Gemini, a recent threat intelligence tool that uses conversational search to rapidly identify details regarding existing issues or threat actors. This tool enhances threat research by automating web crawling of relevant open-source intelligence articles. It ingests information and generates concise summaries to assist security professionals in more effectively combating threats.

According to Sunil Potti, vice president and general manager of Google Cloud Security, and Sandra Joyce, vice president of Google Threat Intelligence, the combination of their comprehensive understanding of the threat landscape and Gemini has significantly enhanced their threat research processes and strengthened their defense capabilities. This has shortened the time required to identify and protect against new threats, as stated in a recent blog post.Customers can now quickly analyze large datasets, quickly identify potentially malicious files, and efficiently complete complex manual threat intelligence tasks, the company added.
