I recently wrote that the iPhone 13 was a great phone for those who couldn’t afford the iPhone 15, and I still stand by that opinion. However, I also feel that Apple is missing a reliable budget phone. The iPhone SE is scheduled to be released in 2022, but I’m a little disappointed with its design. It has a 60 Hz display, only one back camera, and lacks some features compared to other budget phones from Samsung, Google, and OnePlus. If Apple compares it to these competitors, it risks being seen as abandoning old, out-of-date technology that was rushed into production before being released to consumers.The problem is that if Apple does not follow this path, there will not be any other low-cost options for iPhone users. Rumours suggest that the iPhone SE 4 could be on the way, with a fresher design inspired by the iPhone 14 and 15. This would be good news, as both those phones have a great look and aesthetic that is reminiscent of Apple’s industrial design from the time of Jony Ive. However, the release date of the iPhone SE remains unclear, and it is not yet known whether it will be released this year or in 2025. Despite this uncertainty, I hope that Apple will release a new iPhone SE this year because I believe it would be a great addition to its lineup.Meanwhile, the cost of living continues to rise and smartphones are not getting cheaper. Phones are also becoming less valuable, especially if you’re tied to the Apple ecosystem. As an iPhone 15 Pro Max user, I appreciate the upgrades the current model offers compared to its predecessor, but even with a contract from a telecom operator, Apple’s flagship phone is still quite expensive. The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus are both good phones with impressive, though not overly large, displays and 60 Hz cameras. They don’t compare well in terms of pricing to other options on the market, however. For roughly the same price as one of these phones, you could buy a Samsung Galaxy S23 with three rear cameras, a 120 Hz display, and many AI features.Based on rumors about the upcoming iPhone 16, it seems that Apple’s next-generation smartphone won’t be a major leap forward compared to the iPhone 15. We can expect some performance improvements, but they will likely be minor, as the last few iPhone models have already been quite powerful. It’s also possible that the iPhone 16 Pro models will have generative AI capabilities, although I doubt there will be significant changes to the design or price of regular iPhone models. With that in mind, we may need to wait until the iPhone 17 for some truly new updates. A new low-cost model with a modern design and features could be very desirable. Some people say Apple fans will accept anything, but this may not always be true, especially when mobile phones make big leaps in performance, camera quality, and other features with each generation.Today’s consumers are highly tech-savvy and the best Android phones are now fully functional. Therefore, there is no longer a need to remain within the Apple ecosystem. Higher prices and more affordable alternatives may lead people towards the Android side.
Of course, Apple phones are still selling well and there is ample evidence that iPhone 14 sales are better than previous models. Therefore, it seems improbable that Apple’s fortunes will suddenly change. However, I believe Apple has an opportunity to capitalize on the budget phone market. An affordable and powerful iPhone allows more people access to services such as Arcade, Music+, and News+. The savings on phone hardware also help grow Apple’s revenue. These services are available on various devices.
Apple is a major player in mobile technology and disrupts the market with affordable devices. It sets standards for others to follow, although Google’s Pixel series also competes in this space.While this may be wishful thinking, consumers should not be blamed for Apple’s decisions, as the company tends to pursue what it wants. However, this year I plan to buy a new iPhone SE, which will have the latest design and feature set. If that does not happen, I might consider the rumored Google Pixel 8A as a budget option for 2024.
