Matter 1.3 pushes the standard into your kitchen, laundry room, and garage

An update has been released that adds support for additional devices. The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) has released Matter version 1.3, which provides smart home device manufacturers with another way to extend their technology into kitchens and other areas of the home.

One of the main features of this update is the ability to control key household appliances, such as oven and cooktop devices. With ovens, home users can now monitor the “status” of the oven, such as whether it is preheating or cooling, and control its functions. They can instruct the appliance to start cooking the food placed inside. Similarly, stovetop cooking surfaces have a similar level of control, allowing users to switch them on or adjust the heat from a distance.

In terms of laundry rooms, the CSA has added support for dryers and provided control over various functions, such as selecting the drying mode. The device will even send a notification when the clothes are dry. With regard to washing machines, support was added in Matter versions 1.2 and 1.3, respectively.Managing utilities is another significant aspect of homeownership. To assist with this, CSA has enhanced the energy reporting features of the system. Connected smart devices now provide information about the amount of electricity they consume and produce, as well as other essential metrics such as the current voltage. This energy functionality also extends to electric vehicles. Through Matter 1.3, EV drivers can monitor the battery charge level to match the desired range by setting a “departure time” or manually deactivating the charging process.

Additionally, Matter monitors the plumbing system in your home. The application will display information from the installed pipe sensors, alerting you if there is a leak or if the pipes have frozen.

Other notable improvements: Everything we have discussed so far also applies to devices that were previously unsupported. The rest of the update contains new software features and upgrades to existing hardware.According to the CSA, scenes are now available. Homeowners have the ability to create custom settings that can be activated with a single press of a button. For instance, it is possible to dim the lights in a living room or change their color instantly.

Matter 1.3 also enables users to combine several commands into one, allowing them to be sent off sequentially. The CSA states that this will help reduce the “popcorn effect,” which is the delay between when a command is sent to a smart device and when it is executed.

Software improvements in Matter 1.3 include the ability for smart TVs to receive notifications from other devices, as well as various bug fixes.
