Recently, AI has made headlines, not only in the form of ChatGPT – an AI-generated aerial photo of surfers on a sunny beach, created by Absolutely AI (see below) – which deceived the judges and brought the photo closer to winning a competition organized by a camera importer. Flushed with the fact that a picture created by artificial intelligence had come into view, the digital retailer immediately redistributed the prize among the human participants, and has now raised the stakes by announcing a new photo contest, in which both photos taken by photographers and images created by AI will be accepted. They hope it will “put humans against machines or photos against images, a debate about overloading.” The one-time “man vs. machine” photo contest has no specific theme and is already accepting entries, and promises to end on February 26th.The uniqueness of this decision lies in the fact that the jury, composed of several distinguished professional photographers from Australia, is unaware of whether the images they are viewing are photographs of real-world objects taken by humans using cameras or if they were created by an AI art generator. The jury’s decision will determine whether the AI generator will be able to triumph again.
The victory of AI in the photo contest serves as a testament to the growing capabilities of AI’s artistic generators – not only in creating the bizarre and whimsical images that have become synonymous with Dall-E’s success, but also in producing highly realistic results. Out of curiosity, I decided to use some of the AI generators I found and create realistic photos using the Discord app and Midjourney. It was not as easy as it sounds.Take a closer look at the images, and you will notice cracks. When I spoke with Jamie Sissons, the founder of Absolutely AI and creator of the winning image, he explained that the image is compelling because there was no reason to expect anything else.
AI will now be in the spotlight, but it is assumed that the conditions for a high-quality photo contest will be less strict. This is because they rely on AI to examine images for evidence. I would not be surprised if the AI image won again.
The initial competition sparked a negative reaction from the photographic community towards artificial intelligence art generators. These are seen as a threat to people who try to make a living in creative industries. I am sure many people, whether photographers or not, will support the winner, even if it doesn’t solve the debate between humans and AI.Whoever wins, I hope the competition will draw a lot of interest from photographers and AI experts alike. I’m excited to see the results.
