Can’t find your pics amongst a sea of GIFs and memes? A Google Photos update could fix that

Updating Google Photos can help you organize your photos better and make it easier to find your photos among all your saved memes, WhatsApp images, and GIFs.

Reliable tipster AssembleDebug has discovered details of an update in the code for Google Photos version 6.79.0.624777117 that apparently allows you to view and organize all your photos on your phone. However, the main Photos tab currently displays not only photos you’ve taken on your phone, but also any images you’ve downloaded.

Even with careful use of folders, the main Photos tab can easily turn into a mishmash of screenshots, album art, and silly GIFs. Add to this images downloaded from social media apps like X, Facebook and WhatsApp, and finding specific images can be difficult.

There are currently some limited filtering options available in the Library tab, including shortcuts such as Favorites, Utilities, Archive, and Trash. However, the update may allow you to filter the photos section using a toggle called Hide Clutter, which will filter the results, hiding unnecessary files and making your phone’s memory less cluttered.

According to AssembleDebug, this feature will be located in the photos tab under the “Personalize Your Grid” section, accessed through the three-dot settings menu. However, the images will still be available in their associated album in the Library tab after filtering and hiding.

New memories

The Memories feature could also be redesigned. Memories creates automatically playing collections of related images with music, such as those taken throughout the day, and you can edit and customize these selections before easily sharing them.

AssembleDebug claims that an upcoming UI update could change the way memories from the current collection of grouped thumbnails are displayed to a single rounded rectangular image taken from an album, providing a cleaner layout.

Another change discovered by AssembleDebug was a new option to turn off AI memory title hints, which can sometimes be inaccurate or incorrect, such as tagging a friend or sibling in a romantic context.

You’ll be able to access the new option in your Google Photos settings under Settings > AI Features by Labs. Find a “Help Me” title that you can turn on and off. Google has also updated its support page with information on how to enable and disable this feature.

While the Google Photos app is a handy tool for managing your phone’s image library, the current cluttered view could greatly benefit from options like adding a Hide Clutter option and disabling AI Memory Header Suggestions, and updated UI changes could further simplify and improve the user experience experience.

However, according to AssembleDebug, these features appear to be in the early stages of development, so it could be a while before we see some or all of them on our phones.
