Sound the alarms – oh wait

'These team conversations have been tough' – Sonos power-users really don't like its new app, and the company responds, including asking for feedback

A significant number of users have voiced their dissatisfaction with the recently released companion app, which underwent a major redesign following years of extensive user research and was made available for iOS and Android devices on 7th May, along with a new desktop browser app. Since the launch of the updated version, the app marketplaces have seen an influx of one-star reviews.

The company’s social media channels describe the new application as offering a fresh new look, faster access to music, and improved control. The aim is to provide a simplified interface that can be customized to suit individual user preferences, providing a clean slate from previous versions. However, a post in a Sonos forum with over 700 upvotes states that the company has “made a mistake.” Since then, Sonos has released an official statement via The Verge, from Maxime Bouvat-Merlin, Chief Product Officer. The statement states: “The redesign of the Sonos application is an ambitious project that shows our commitment to innovation and renewal. It takes courage to reinvent the core product of a brand from the ground up, and to do so knowing that it may involve taking some steps backward in order to eventually leap forward into the future.”The company has also reached out to members of the /r/Sonos community, where much of the discussion has taken place (as well as some discussion on the TechRadar forum), to inform them that their feedback is being considered and encourage further input.

“These internal discussions have been challenging, but have been very useful in identifying the features and functionalities that are most important to users,” says Keith from Sonos, the company’s Community Manager.

Therefore, if you are among the users affected by missing features (for more details on these, please see below), we would appreciate it if you could share your thoughts with us.So, what has happened? There have been numerous reports of issues with the app, with users experiencing various problems. The main complaints seem to revolve around missing features that were previously available, such as sleep timers, alarm clocks, and volume control settings. Users have reported that these features have either been hidden or removed entirely from the app. (I was unable to locate these features in the Android version of the app either, as part of my role.)

Given the importance of alarms for waking up and getting to work on time, removing these features without notice seems like a significant risk. Additionally, the new version of the app does not allow users to customize their music queues, which is a fundamental aspect of music streaming. The absence of this feature is surprising, especially if Sonos intends to re-add it at a later date. The redesign is sleek and modern, with rounded edges and a prominent “now playing” menu. Some users may be unaffected by the changes, but Sonos’ focus on simplifying the interface and presenting important information clearly is evident in the new software.

Releasing a new application can be challenging in today’s fast-paced environment, where companies are pressured to release updates quickly. However, removing features from an existing app with a significant user base may not be well-received.

Sonos acknowledges that they will gradually add more features in the future, indicating that the current version is a beta release. Screen reader compatibility is a notable omission from the current design. While the promise of future updates may provide some consolation for users who have experienced a sudden decrease in the functionality of their home audio system, it is insufficient for many individuals. We have contacted Sonos to inquire about the expected timeframe for the addition of new features, and we will update this article upon receipt of a response.

For more advanced users, we recommend delaying the update of your Sonos system as there is currently no means to reverse the process. (It may be beneficial for Sonos to make the previous S2 version available for download as a standalone option, which would facilitate a smooth transition while work is ongoing.) If you have already upgraded, we suggest configuring an alternative alarm system. However, it should be noted that the new application does include a dark mode, which may assist users in creating a more conducive environment prior to sleep.
