Anzu Robotics Becomes an Alternative to DJI in the US

There’s no doubt about it: DJI is a leading manufacturer of the best drones. However, if you’re in the US, this is an issue due to uncertainty around future restrictions and current bans on Chinese-made drone technology amid data security concerns. Cue Anzu Robotics, a new name in the drone space and a DJI alternative that actually uses DJI technology.
A new company, Anzu Robotics, founded by former Autel Robotics CEO Randal Warnas, has accelerated the creation of high-quality drones by licensing proven DJI drone technology. As part of a one-time deal for its new Raptor series of drones (and no ongoing partnership with DJI has been announced), Anzu Robotics used hardware from the DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise: a high-end 2022 professional foldable drone with a superb 20-megapixel micro-four-thirds sensor.
If Raptor drones use DJI technology, how will they avoid restrictions in US airspace? Well, the drones are manufactured outside of China in Malaysia and use domestically developed software created in collaboration with Aloft Technologies. This ingenious approach leverages the best technology from drone industry leader DJI while sidestepping potential bans and current restrictions placed on Chinese technology in the US.
It’s a move that could make Skydio and Brink break a sweat. Two US drone manufacturers have benefited from DJI’s recent troubles in the US: a recent congressional bill proposes a complete ban on the use of DJI drones by federal government agencies, including the military, as well as the creation of geofences for public safety departments such as the fire department. Consequently, Skydio ceased production of its consumer drones to focus on lucrative commercial and government markets where DJI drones are banned or banned.
Professional drones from Skydio and Brinc are also very expensive, and Anzu Robotics is aiming to disrupt the US drone market by edging out its competitors with new drones using DJI’s cutting-edge technology. Many such companies that previously used DJI drones and are familiar with this technology have been forced to close their fleets. For them, Anzu Robotics will be a compelling choice to take to the US skies once again.
Raptor drones start at $5,000 (around £4,000 / AU$7,790), which is more than double what you pay for the DJI Mavic 3 on which the Raptors’ hardware is based. That’s a high price U.S. agencies will have to pay to avoid restrictions on Chinese drone technology.
The ongoing DJI saga
We’ve been reporting on the DJI ban in the US for years. In 2024, this is not yet a complete ban; consumers can use their DJI drones purchased within the United States. However, at the time of writing, a new House committee is calling for tighter tariffs on DJI drones and even a de facto ban for both business owners and consumers.
Obviously, this is just the beginning for Anzu Robotics, which is initially focusing on getting Skydio and Brinc noticed in the federal and public safety department markets. Who knows if it will expand into the consumer space, or even if it will be necessary.
There is now a new series of Raptor drones from a new company that drone specialist site DroneXL describes as having a “competitive advantage” over Skydio and Brinc. Let’s wait and see where this one goes.
