Logic Pro 2 is a reminder that Apple's AI ambitions aren't just about chatbots

M4 hints at its artificial intelligence capabilities. While the main focus of Apple’s May 7th event was on hardware, with the introduction of four new iPad models, a new Apple Pencil, and a Magic Keyboard, there were also references to AI in the context of the M2 and M4 chips, as well as updates to Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for tablet devices.

These latter two applications are particularly noteworthy, as they include new AI-enhanced features that enable users to create drumbeats, piano riffs, or even apply a warmer, more distorted audio effect to a recording. Furthermore, Logic Pro on iPad 2 now allows users to split a recording into separate tracks in mere seconds based on instrument type.

This represents a glimpse into the types of AI capabilities that Apple believes hold the most promise. Unlike some other offerings from companies such as Google and OpenAI, which focus on chatbots and image generation, these features in Logic Pro truly enhance the user experience and expand the functionality available within the application.A trio of AI enhancements for Logic Pro on the iPad. Stem Splitter is a feature that allows users to split a single audio file into four separate tracks. Each track can be assigned to a specific instrument, making it easier for musicians to identify and work with individual elements of a composition.

This feature is particularly useful for musicians who may be recording or performing in public settings. For example, a singer or instrumentalist may want to split their track into vocals, drums, bass, and guitar, so they can work on each part individually. Logic Pro 2 can then analyze the split tracks and provide additional editing tools to help users refine their work. This feature is particularly beneficial for editing and mixing audio tracks, as it facilitates the identification and adjustment of individual elements. With the Stem Splitter tool in Logic Pro 2, users are also able to apply plugins to each track, further enhancing the sound and creative potential.

The iPad Pro M4 is expected to be exceptionally efficient when it comes to performing this task, owing to its 16-core Neural Processing Unit. It will operate on any iPad powered by Apple’s Silicon, utilizing a combination of AI and deep learning capabilities on the device. For music producers of all levels, it provides a straightforward and intuitive method to transform voice recordings into usable and blendable tracks. Instruments powered by AI will assist in completing the track.Consider the Bass Session Player within Logic Pro for iPad. Building on the Stem Splitter feature, Logic Pro now provides Dummer, both on Mac and iPad, as a means to easily add drums to a track via a virtual player that may be customized in terms of style and complexity. Furthermore, Logic Pro for iPad 2 includes a piano and bass player, highly adjustable session instruments for any track.

With the piano, you may customize the playing style for each hand, select among four types of pianos, and utilize a variety of additional tools. The instrument is even intelligent enough to identify the location of a track, whether it is a chorus or bridge. Creating a decent-sized track on an iPad Pro took only a few seconds.

The software also includes a Chromaglow effect, which adds space, color, and warmth to your track, similar to other Logic plug-ins. You can select from a range of presets and customize them further.

Interestingly, at this time, Apple did not demonstrate any new Apple Pencil integrations with Logic Pro on the iPad 2. We can anticipate seeing a personalized experience with the palette tool in future updates.

It is clear that Apple’s approach to artificial intelligence, like its other software, services, and hardware products, focuses on providing a meaningful user experience. In the context of music production, this means addressing pain points and unlocking new levels of creativity for musicians.
