In the next version of Apple’s iOS, an overhaul of artificial intelligence is planned.

iOS 18: Feature Rumors, Expected Release Date, and Everything We Want to See

iOS 18 could be one of the most exciting software releases of 2024, and early leaks suggest it could be the biggest software update in iPhone history. It’s a very interesting prospect, given that in our iOS 17 review, we described iOS 17 as “one of the best iOS updates we’ve seen in years.

however, we still don’t know much about iOS 18, at least in terms of confirmed features. Some of what we’ve heard can be found below, as well as information on possible iOS 18 release dates and which phones we plan to support.

Listed below are the key features that we hope will make iOS 18 the best update yet. We’ll also be updating this article with leaks and news whenever new information comes out, so check back soon to stay updated.

Latest News

The leak reveals which devices are most likely to get iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. What haunts him? When will the next major version of iOS be released? Probably September 2024. How much will it cost? This free update is expected to be seen on the next WWDC iOS 18. Based on past history, iOS 18 will almost certainly be released in mid-September 2024, as all major iOS releases since iOS 6 were released on September 13. The release will begin on September 13 between the 20th. Year of manufacture. The launch is likely to (approximately) coincide with the launch of the iPhone 16 and Apple Watch 10 series. However, you don’t have to wait until September to see some of the features of iOS 18 or even try them out, as Apple usually announces new versions of iOS at WWDC, which starts on June 10. In fact, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has now confirmed that several iOS 18-specific AI features will soon be unveiled at WWDC 2024. Here, we’ll take a quick look at many of the key features, as Apple typically releases developer previews and then publicly releases subsequent betas shortly after. So if you don’t mind a few bugs, you might be able to try out the unfinished version of iOS 18 before September. To run iOS 18, you’ll most likely need an iPhone 11 or later. We don’t know yet which phones will support iOS 18, but for reference, iOS 17 is available on all iPhones, starting with the iPhone XR and iPhone XS. Apple has discontinued support for the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X released in the same (2017) year.

Therefore, it is possible that Apple will end support for iPhones released in 2018, namely the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max, in iOS 18. This means that you’ll need an iPhone 11 or later to install iOS 18. However, leaks indicate that every phone running iOS 17 will also get iOS 18. We’ve heard about the leak of iOS 18 compatibility information from two sources, so there’s a good chance it’s true. There’s not much news about iOS 18 yet, but we’ve heard one: Apple is investing heavily in servers and AI capabilities, and the first results of these efforts will be visible by the end of 2024. Similarly, we’ve heard that Apple’s AI-powered Siri assistant could be launched as early as WWDC 2024, when we expect iOS 18 to officially arrive for the first time. But according to reports, it may only be available for the iPhone 16, with speculation coming later.

This feature may require special hardware. We don’t know much about how Siri can be improved, but one example is that it can replace the Shortcuts app, serving as an easy way to accomplish complex tasks. For example, you can ask Siri to create GIFs from the last five photos you took and then send them to your contacts with a simple voice command. Siri could get even better with iOS 18. We’ve also heard that Apple may launch a new App Store dedicated to AI apps. It will reportedly be announced at WWDC 2024 in June and will likely be part of iOS 18. In addition, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says that Apple internally describes iOS 18 as a major update, calling it “ambitious and attractive” with some “important new features” and design. “The same source has officially stated that the visual design of iOS 18 could be significantly improved, although it will not copy the rumors about VisionOS. Perhaps by 2024 we will have a new aesthetic flowering and everything else. We’ve also heard that iOS 18 could bring some new and improved accessibility features, including adaptive voice commands that allow users to speak.

Special phrases to activate various accessibility tools iOS 18 could also add a category system for live speech and could allow you to change the font size in more apps. However, Apple also reportedly paused iOS development in November 2024 18 to get around this issue. This is rare and may indicate problems with some planned features. This, in turn, could mean that some features will be delayed or canceled, but that remains to be seen. However, in March 2024-1, Gurman returned and said that iOS 18 could be “one of the biggest iOS updates — if not the biggest update in the company’s history,” and that Apple employees see the upcoming update as a major change in iPhone technology. iPadOS 18 is expected to arrive alongside iOS 18, with many of the features of both versions being the same. However, there may be some differences. For example, iPadOS 18 will likely add access to the History app, which is already available on iPhone. As for which devices will get iPadOS 18, the earliest leaks on the subject claimed that Apple could end support for tablets based on the A10X Fusion and A10 Fusion chipsets.

Since then, we’ve heard more about the iPad (6th generation), iPad Pro 12.9 (2nd generation), and iPad Pro 10.5 won’t get iPadOS 18. This is a similar, but not identical, announcement, as it means that the iPad 10.2 (2019, despite having the A10 Fusion chipset) will still receive an update. We’re hopeful there’s a lot to see in iOS 18, including the following five improvements. Global implementation of all key functions. You won’t be able to use live voicemail in most countries around the world. One of the main features of iOS 17 is live voicemail, but it’s actually only available in the US and Canada, so iOS 17 as well as the iPhone 15 is significantly worse outside of the US and Canada. This is an unfortunate situation, although Google may be to blame for blocking the phone’s functionality in the US. It’s a big responsibility, but Apple can still do better. So with iOS 18, we expect all the features to be available worldwide, and if that’s really not possible, then we expect Apple to be more transparent about the matter rather than hiding availability in the fine print. 2. Android Enrollment Compatibility Another Apple habit we don’t like is blocking Android features like iMessage and SharePlay. This is sad, but understandable. However, this becomes less obvious when these features are related to security, as is the case with registration. This iOS 17 feature is an automatic way to let your loved ones know you’ve made it home safely, or conversely, let them know you could be in danger if you don’t check in for a flight. In this case, enable the option “Certain people see you where” your phone. But for this to work, both the sender and receiver must be using iOS 17, which means that not only can Android users not actively use the feature (obviously), but they also can’t receive sign-up notifications from others (to a lesser extent).

So, with iOS 18, we’d like Apple to open up this feature to Android users so that even if they can’t automate their own checks, they can use iOS to receive automated messages and alerts from friends and family. 3. Siri AI Update Apple is rumored to be making heavy use of artificial intelligence in iOS 18, and Siri is likely to be one of the main recipients of this support. We certainly hope so, because thanks to ChatGPT, Siri in its current form looks very outdated. Especially now that ChatGPT Voice is available for free on iOS. These Siri updates can make conversations more natural and smooth, and allow Siri to perform more complex tasks than just searching Google or turning on smart lighting. 4. Click to place the cursor in the middle of the word. One of the features that we’d really like Apple to borrow from Android is the ability to just tap the center of a word to place the cursor there so you can easily correct spelling mistakes. Nowadays, to get to the center of a word, you have to hold down the space bar and drag, which works well but is much slower. We don’t expect this to happen in iOS 18, but it’s nice to see. 5. Deep and thoughtful AI integration We’d like to see some AI-enabled camera features. Aside from Siri, we’re hoping Apple will bring artificial intelligence to other parts of iOS 18, but we hope it’s well-thought out and not a half-baked or useless feature. In particular, we’d like to see photography get a lot of AI tools to help edit images. We’re thinking of tools like Google’s Magic Eraser and Magic Editor that allow you to move or delete objects in photos. It would also be interesting to see how space photography and video become more accessible so that it’s not just accessible to Apple Vision Pro users.

iOS 18: rumored features, predicted release date, and everything we want to see

Expect to see iOS 18 at the next WWDC

Judging by the past form, iOS 18 will almost certainly be released in mid-September 2024, given that all major iOS releases since iOS 6 began to be released between September 13 and September 20 of their release year. This launch is likely to coincide (roughly) with the launch of the iPhone 16 and Apple Watch 10 lineup.

iOS 18: rumored features, predicted release date, and everything we want to see

To run iOS 18, you may need an iPhone 11 or later.

We don’t know exactly which phones will support iOS 18 yet, but for reference, iOS 17 works on all iPhones, starting with the iPhone XR and iPhone XS. Apple has discontinued support for the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X, which appeared in the same year (2017).

So, it’s possible that with iOS 18, Apple will end support for iPhones released in 2018, namely the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max.

However, leaks suggest that every phone with iOS 17 will also get iOS 18. We’ve heard about the iOS 18 compatibility leak from two sources, so there’s a good chance it’s accurate.

There aren’t many leaks about iOS 18 yet, but we’ve heard one thing: Apple is spending heavily on servers and AI features — and that the first fruits of these efforts will be ready in late 2024.

Similarly, we’ve heard that Apple’s AI-powered Siri assistant could be unveiled as early as WWDC 2024, when we expect to get our first official look at iOS 18. But it can reportedly only work with the iPhone 16 and later assume that this feature may require special hardware.

We’ve also heard that Apple may launch an entirely new App Store dedicated to AI apps. It will reportedly be announced at WWDC 2024 in June and will most likely become part of iOS 18.

Elsewhere, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman stated that inside the company, Apple described iOS 18 as a major update, calling it “ambitious and attractive” with some “important new features and design.”

The same source has officially stated that the visual design of iOS 18 could be significantly improved, although it won’t copy VisionOS, which has also been rumored. Perhaps in 2024 we can expect new aesthetic blooms, as well as everything else.

One of these changes could be the ability to customize your iPhone’s home screen more freely, including having gaps between app icons.

We’ve also heard that iOS 18 could bring some new and improved accessibility features, including adaptive voice commands that will allow users to speak a special phrase to activate various accessibility tools. iOS 18 could also add a category system to Live Speech and possibly allow you to change font size in more apps.

However, Apple also reportedly paused development of iOS 18 in November 2024 to fix the glitches. This is a rare case that may indicate that some of the planned features are proving to be problematic. This, in turn, could mean that some features will be delayed or canceled, but that remains to be seen.

However, in January 2024, Gurman returned and stated that iOS 18 could be “one of the biggest iOS updates — if not the biggest — in the company’s history,” with Apple employees viewing the upcoming update as a major change to iPhone technology.

iPadOS 18 is expected to arrive alongside iOS 18, and many of the features will be the same in both versions. However, there may be some differences. For example, iPadOS 18 may well add access to the History app, which is already available on iPhone.

As for which devices will get iPadOS 18. The earliest leak on the matter was that Apple may end support for tablets with A10X Fusion and A10 Fusion chipsets.

Since then, we’ve heard more specifically that the iPad (6th generation), iPad Pro 12.9 (2nd generation), and iPad Pro 10.5 won’t get iPadOS 18. This is a similar but not identical claim, as it would mean that the iPad 10.2 (2019) would still receive an update despite having the A10 Fusion chipset.

There are a number of things we’d like to see in iOS 18, including the following five improvements.

1. Global implementation of all key features.

You can’t use Live Voicemail in most countries around the world.

One of the main features of iOS 17 was live voicemail, but it’s actually only available in the US and Canada, making iOS 17 and, by extension, the iPhone 15 significantly worse outside of the US and Canada.

It’s an unfortunate situation, and while Google may be even more to blame for blocking phone features in the U.S., Apple could still do a lot more here.

So, with iOS 18, we want all the features to be available globally, and if that’s really not possible, then we want Apple to be more transparent about it, rather than hiding availability in the fine print.

2. Android Compatibility for Registration

Another Apple habit we don’t like is Android blocking features like iMessage and SharePlay. This is sad, but to some extent understandable. However, this becomes less clear when these features are related to security, as is the case with Check In.

This iOS 17 feature is an automated way to let loved ones know you’ve arrived home safely, or conversely, let them know you may be in danger if you haven’t checked in — and in the latter case, let select people see where your phone is.

But both the sender and receiver must have iOS 17 to work, which means that not only can Android users not actively use the feature (understandably), but they also can’t receive sign-up notifications from others (to a lesser extent).

So, with iOS 18, we would like Apple to open up this feature to Android users so that even if they can’t automate their own checks, they can receive these automated messages and alerts from friends and family members using iOS.

3. AI Update for Siri

Rumors suggest that Apple is going to actively use artificial intelligence in iOS 18, and it is likely that Siri will be one of the main recipients of this support. We certainly hope so, because ChatGPT makes Siri look incredibly outdated in its current form. Especially now that ChatGPT Voice is available for free on iOS.

These Siri updates will possibly allow for a more natural and fluid conversation, as well as allow Siri to perform much more complex tasks than just googling something or turning on smart lights.

4. Place the cursor in the middle of the word with a tap.

One of the features we’d really like Apple to borrow from Android is the ability to simply tap in the center of a word to place a cursor there, so you can easily correct typos later.

Nowadays, to get to the center of a word, you have to hold down the space bar and drag, which works well enough, but is significantly slower. We don’t expect this in iOS 18, but it would be nice to see it.

5. Deep but Thoughtful AI Integration

Aside from Siri, we’re hoping Apple will bring artificial intelligence to other parts of iOS 18, but we want it to be done thoughtfully, not with half-baked or useless features.

In particular, we’d like to see photography get a large set of AI tools to help edit images. We’re thinking about things like Google’s Magic Eraser and Magic Editor tools, which allow you to move or delete objects in photos. It would also be interesting to see how spatial photos and videos become more accessible so that they aren’t just for Apple Vision Pro owners.
