The OnePlus Open is a large foldable smartphone that doesn’t feel like a compromise. It has a regular phone-like look and feel, and its camera is one of the best among foldable models. While you can buy a Galaxy with more features, the OnePlus Open has improved multitasking capabilities and excellent folding features. Yes, there are some bugs, such as performance and battery life, but it’s still better than other foldable phones, and the best part is that it’s much cheaper.

OnePlus has launched its first folding tablet, the OnePlus Open. Compared to other folding devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Google Pixel Fold, the OnePlus Open stands out. When closed, the device takes on a unique shape that is more comfortable to hold. The size of the Galaxy is too large, and the Pixel is too small, but the OnePlus Open strikes the perfect balance. If you are willing to pay twice as much for a device, you should not have to worry about its size.
When you open the OnePlus, you will be greeted by the brightest and most impressive display among all folding smartphones. While there is a slight crease when the device is open, it is barely noticeable and does not affect the viewing experience.And the best part about this phone is that it’s easy and convenient to use. The Galaxy, on the other hand, can be quite stiff at first and the Pixel Fold doesn’t open smoothly. It takes two awkward taps and I always feel like I’m going to break the phone. When I open the hinge, the OnePlus Open catches my attention.
Compared to other foldable tablets, the OnePlus Open is just better. This size works best when closed. It’s easier to use. The OnePlus is a great choice in every way, and OnePlus didn’t stop there. They also added a really good camera, which other phone manufacturers haven’t bothered to include.
As with other foldable phones, cameras vary from terrible to terrible due to the limitations of the design. The OnePlus has the best camera, almost as good as the best flat camera phones, and it’s better than any other foldable phone I’ve used.
Of course, this would require a large camera bump at the back, but it’s a large bubble that’s twice as thick as the largest camera bump we’ve seen so far. However, it’s still a good compromise, even though the phone in your pocket might seem bulky.
Folding smartphones offer a lot of versatility when it comes to camera angles, but it’s unfortunate that the best folding phones don’t yet have cameras that match their potential. OnePlus Open comes close to fixing that.
When closed, OnePlus Open is the slimmest folding phone I’ve seen, and when open, it’s just as slim as the Pixel Fold. It offers a larger screen and a larger battery while still being lighter than its competitors.In fact, the OnePlus Open is much lighter than the Pixel. This makes a significant difference when wearing the phone. The OnePlus Open weighs approximately the same as the iPhone 14 Pro Max from last year. Packing two displays, a large battery, and a premium camera into a case with a weight similar to that of last year’s best iPhone was an incredible achievement. Titanium has made the iPhone 15 Pro Max this year slightly lighter.
The OnePlus software’s simple and elegant design makes the OnePlus Open a pleasure to use. Although it may not have as many features as the Galaxy Z Fold 5, the OnePlus has an advantage in terms of usability. It makes it easy for users to create custom home screens, navigate settings and tools, and open multiple windows simultaneously without the need for long guides or pop-up reminders to find hidden features.

While OnePlus does not prioritize water resistance and durability in its phones, it is still a great device. However, there are some concerns regarding the OnePlus Open’s IPX4 rating. This means that the phone may not be able to withstand dust and water as well as other devices with higher ratings. Although the OnePlus Open can withstand light splashes and 10 minutes of light rain, it may not be suitable for swimming or prolonged exposure to water.
OnePlus offers a simple bumper case for the OnePlus Open, which is helpful for protecting the device from minor scratches and bumps. However, it is recommended to use a case with the phone to ensure maximum protection. After using the OnePlus Open, I wouldn’t go back to a flat phone like the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The Open has become an essential part of my daily life, and I can’t imagine going back.
OnePlus Open Review: Price and Availability
While we wait for OnePlus to officially announce the price and availability of the OnePlus Open, we’ve been playing around with other tech experts to estimate what it might cost. We initially assumed the price would be around $1,499, but our colleague suggested that the price might be too low.
OnePlus has a reputation for surprising the market with devices that offer flagship-level features at affordable prices. We were surprised by the fact that OnePlus is able to offer such a phone with a range of features at such an attractive price, including trade-in offers.
The current estimated price for the OnePlus Open is US$1,699 / £1,599. OnePlus Open Review: Design
What is the ideal size for a folding tablet? When closed, it should be the same size as a regular smartphone. When opened, it should resemble a mini-tablet. And out of all the foldable smartphones I have seen, the OnePlus Open comes closest to this ideal.
Most importantly, the display’s aspect ratio on the OnePlus Open is similar to that of some of the best mobile phones on the market, such as the iPhone. The iPhone has an aspect ratio of 19.5:9, while the OnePlus Open has a 20:9 aspect ratio. It doesn’t have the thinness of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 or other Galaxy Fold models, nor does it have the short and wide appearance of the Pixel Fold. People won’t notice that you are using a folding smartphone unless you show them the side of it.When I closed the OnePlus Open, I was surprised by its thickness. I tried to remember the last time I used a thick phone, and it was the 2009 iPhone 3GS. That phone had a similar thickness to the OnePlus Open, about 12 mm when it was closed. The iPhone 4, on the other hand, was significantly smaller and introduced the concept of thin phones with metal frames and glass front and back.

Will folding smartphones get thinner? Of course they will, as the Honor Magic V2 is already 1 millimeter thinner than the OnePlus Open. The OnePlus Open’s thickness, especially around its large camera protrusion, is a major disadvantage compared to flat smartphones. However, if you plan on using the built-in large screen efficiently (and you should), the thickness may not be an issue.
But there is one thing to note. If you thought the large camera was bad, get ready for more. The circular camera of the OnePlus 11 is noticeable, but it’s not without its appeal. The camera protrusion on the OnePlus Open is more of a mountain, without the wide K-shaped metal finishing off the design. It looms over the back like a giant, glowing eye.Besides, I definitely felt it in my pocket, so I preferred to carry the phone with the lens facing out. It’s not a big deal. It’s just a minor inconvenience. To get a high-quality camera on a folding phone, I would still take it, especially when compared to the poor-quality cameras in past folding phones, which were much more expensive.
Open the “Open”, and you’ll see a beautiful inner display. There are creases, but they’re hardly noticeable. I often have to tilt my phone to make sure the light captures the crease correctly and shows it to the viewer. If you swipe your finger slowly back and forth over the crease, you won’t feel anything, but if you swipe quickly, there may be a slight indent.
If you don’t see a crease in the OnePlus Open, is there really a crease there?
The OnePlus Open cycle offers both satisfaction and frustration. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 feels a bit stiff, and it takes effort to open, while the Pixel Fold is simply terrible. The hinges will open almost fully, but you’ll need to apply extra pressure to straighten the phone, which is quite unpleasant.
On the other hand, the OnePlus Open seems to want to be both open and closed. Unlike other larger clamshell phones, there are no barriers that prevent you from using the phone.
The fingerprint scanner on the OnePlus Open is located on the power button, and OnePlus has used good fingerprint technology. It worked well every time I tried it. The phone also has excellent face recognition capabilities, so I usually unlock it that way.The OnePlus Open also has a three-way mute switch, which is a standard feature on almost all OnePlus flagship phones (this feature is discontinued on iPhone Pro models). You can quickly switch between mute, vibrate, and sound by using one motion. If you often attend theaters or meetings, a mute switch may be useful.
Both color options are worth considering. Black “vegan” leather (which is actually plastic) has a very textured finish and looks luxurious. My green unit fits in well with the other green OnePlus products I’ve purchased and enjoyed this year. OnePlus had a successful year, and each flagship product they released deserved attention.
OnePlus Open Display Review
The two displays on the OnePlus Open are incredible, matching the quality of any flagship phone or tablet on the market. The main display is 6.3 inches in size and uses LTPO 3.0 technology, allowing it to slow down to 10Hz for low power usage and continuous operation. The secondary display is also impressive, at 7.82 inches, similar in size to the iPad Mini (2021), and has a refresh rate of up to 120Hz.
OnePlus continues to strive for the best display technology for its devices, with brightness levels that exceed those of competitors. The Pixel Fold reaches 1,450 nits in direct sunlight, while the OnePlus Open easily achieves this level of brightness with regular use. Even Google’s new Pixel 8 Pro only reaches a peak brightness of 2,400 nits, making the OnePlus a clear winner in this area.In terms of screen size, the OnePlus Open actually offers more screen real estate than the Pixel Fold or the Galaxy Z Fold 5. While competing phones may advertise 7.6-inch displays, those measurements don’t take into account the diagonal size of the screens. The dimensions and diagonal measurements don’t provide a clear picture of the actual size of the display.
Inside the Pixel Fold and the Galaxy Z Fold 5, you’ll find a screen that measures approximately 28.4 square inches. The OnePlus Open, on the other hand, offers 30.4 square inches, which is 2 additional square inches diagonally. While this may not seem like a significant difference, other devices already look quite large. However, when combined with the much larger external display, the additional space on the internal screen of the OnePlus Open feels like a nice addition.The OnePlus Open’s external display is its biggest selling point, but its dimensions can be misleading. While the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 may have a larger screen at 6.2 inches, it is quite tall and narrow, making it less practical to use. In contrast, the OnePlus Open offers a 6.31-inch display, which may seem like a significant increase, but in reality, it is much bigger.
The iPhone 15’s screen area is approximately 14.15 square inches, while the OnePlus’s external screen is even larger at 14.9 square inches. This makes the OnePlus a more attractive option for those who value a larger screen. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 falls short in this regard, coming in at almost two square inches less than the OnePlus, and more than an inch less than the base iPhone 15 model. Even Samsung’s more expensive phones do not offer as much screen real estate as Apple’s entry-level iPhone, unless you choose to expand the Galaxy’s display.
OnePlus Open Review: Software
The OnePlus Oxygen OS in the OnePlus Open smartphone is clean and elegant. It is closer to the Android version of Google Pixel than Samsung’s One UI, which makes it easier to use and more intuitive. The interface is also free from unexpected crashes and unforced errors, making it a reliable choice for users.
One of the advantages of the OnePlus Open is that apps run smoothly on both closed and open phones. This is in contrast to the Pixel Fold, which can sometimes cause problems with app display. However, the OnePlus Open handles this issue well. Apps look great on all screen sizes, from small to large, unlike the Pixel which sometimes has issues with displaying apps correctly on large screens.
While Samsung fans may have more features, some of which can be useful, the OnePlus Open does not have the ability to turn into a desktop computer, like Samsung’s Dex software. Additionally, there is no secondary virtual assistant like Bixby to manage all settings on the phone. Finally, a thin pen cannot be used on the open screen, although this may not be a major concern for some users.
However, there is nothing missing here. The OnePlus Open has everything you would expect from a good folding tablet. You can easily launch applications by swiping your finger from the edge of the screen, and you can place your applications in a small pop-up window on top of a larger one.
The OnePlus Open is very unpretentious and easy to use. While it may not have as many features as the Galaxy Z Fold 5, it also has fewer menus and options, making it simpler to navigate.OnePlus deserves credit for creating its own unique ecosystem of products. The OnePlus Pad, in particular, is a great tablet that has some special features that work in conjunction with other OnePlus devices, such as the OnePlus Open. When you connect your device, it automatically shares content like photos and items you’ve copied or cut from the clipboard. You can copy an image on one device and have it appear on the other immediately.
Samsung and Apple offer similar, and even more advanced, features. It’s always great to see how mobile device manufacturers show appreciation for their fans.
OnePlus Open Review: Cameras
It can be challenging to fit a high-performance camera in a folding smartphone. Due to the limited depth available in folding phones, the camera design must be optimized to take great photos. OnePlus has used a new type of multilayer sensor from Sony in the OnePlus Open, which seems to be as good or even better than the OnePlus 11 on paper. The OnePlus 11 has a very good camera for creating cool and artistic photos.
Did I mention that the camera has a noticeable bulge? Let’s move on. The OnePlus Open offers a variety of shooting modes, which may be overwhelming. I’m not sure if I fully understand all the options provided, including long exposure, slow motion, slow motion video, and more esoteric modes like XPAN. These modes are separate from the main video mode.
In addition to the other camera modes, there is also an “action mode”, but I’m not sure exactly what it does, as I don’t see many actions to use it with. Sometimes, a small round button appears on the screen, similar to a waning crescent moon, which you can click on to enable or disable certain features. However, what effect this actually has is unclear.
Exploring the settings doesn’t provide much clarity either. There is no manual for each feature, and it’s difficult to configure exactly how you want. For instance, I can’t adjust the resolution of my photos manually, except for using a 10-bit color mode which saves photos in a different file format to conserve space. Is that significant? I’m unsure.

The viewfinder could be switched to a smaller display when the phone is unfolded, allowing users to see themselves on the display while taking selfies with the high-quality main camera, rather than a 20 megapixel selfie camera.
Folding clamshell phones like the Motorola Razr Ultra have even more features that make using the camera fun in a crowd. The external display displays funny faces that make children smile, as well as cool camera angles that can be adjusted using the camera. However, these features are not available on the OnePlus Open. Although it has a better camera than other clamshell models, the advantages of a folding phone with a camera are not as significant as one might expect.
OnePlus Open Review: Performance
The OnePlus Open uses the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which makes it the latest major phone released this year with the best Qualcomm processor. This is significant, as the OnePlus 11 was the first to be released with this processor, before the Samsung Galaxy S23 series released earlier this year, and OnePlus ended the year on the same Snapdragon chip.
Of course, this means that the performance of the OnePlus Open won’t remain at the top for long. Qualcomm is approaching a new summit with their Snapdragon processors, and more powerful chips are expected to be released soon. While the OnePlus Open is fast, it’s not necessarily the fastest phone on the market, and other phones are already popping up with faster processors.
Despite this, the interface of the OnePlus Open remains smooth and pleasant, even when switching between different screen sizes and cameras. Whether you need to switch between apps or change the viewfinder for better selfies, the OnePlus Open will always be responsive and seamless.
When playing the most demanding graphics games, my phone struggled a bit compared to some of the more powerful Android smartphones on the market. The Galaxy S23 Ultra, for example, did not stutter or lag as much as my phone. While I have never lost a game due to poor performance, I have seen the game freeze or crash several times, particularly on loading screens.
The Apple chip is significantly more powerful than the Snapdragon chip used in most other smartphones, so the iPhone 15 provides better performance. Even the iPad mini, which uses the older A15 Bionic chip, runs as smoothly as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip. Therefore, if you are considering buying the OnePlus Open over the iPhone or iPad mini, it would be wise to choose the Apple device for its superior performance.Apart from the performance impact, I continued to use OnePlus Open to play games on other phones that I owned. Playing on the larger built-in display was fun and provided a new level of immersion for mobile games. Even the most demanding graphics-intensive games, such as Genshin Impact, could run smoothly on OnePlus Open. The larger display also made it easier to control characters and read small text on the screen.

OnePlus Open Battery Life Review
The OnePlus Open can last an entire day if used properly. If you use a large screen and play lots of mobile games, the battery life will naturally decrease. OnePlus has several innovative features to increase battery life, but you can still do a lot with your device without significantly increasing its size.
Usually, flagship smartphones of this size have batteries with a capacity of around 5,000mAh, but the OnePlus Open has two batteries with a combined capacity of 4,805mAh, which is slightly lower. Having two batteries not only helps with the folding design, but also allows the phone to use OnePlus’ SUPER VOOC fast charging technology at speeds up to 67 watts.
The iPhone 15 Pro can charge with less than 30 watts of power, and the faster the power, the quicker the charging time will be. The OnePlus Open can easily be fully charged in about 30 minutes. Unfortunately, the OnePlus Open does not have wireless charging. For some users, this may not be a big deal, but for others it is a significant drawback. I am used to wireless charging and prefer to charge my mobile phone in my car or using a dedicated charger. I understand that OnePlus wanted to save space and maybe money, but it was disappointing for me.
Is it worth buying the OnePlus Open?

I considered a folding model, but I was put off by the camera. Whenever I review foldable smartphones, I often complain about their cameras. But not this time. The OnePlus Open has a great camera, so if you’re concerned about camera quality, give it a try.
Do you prefer green?

How I Tested the OnePlus Open
OnePlus invited me to a day-long summit to learn more about the OnePlus Open, and I came away with a positive review. We had the chance to take photos of New York, but since I received the device, OnePlus has updated the software several times, particularly in terms of image processing.
The photos definitely improved since I received my review phone. OnePlus advised me to expect another software update before publishing this review, but that didn’t happen. So, it’s possible that image quality may change and improve in the future, in which case, I may return to this review (and delete this paragraph).
During my time with the OnePlus Open, I used it as my main work phone. I used it for all of my work communications, including scheduling and calls, especially video calls on the go. I also listened to music and played games on the phone.I tested the camera on the OnePlus Open using mainly the basic photo and video modes, as well as other camera modes that the device offers. I used it both during the day and at night, both at home and when traveling, to capture images and videos of various scenes.
To test the camera’s performance, I used the built-in testing software that OnePlus provides to compare it with other smartphones I have previously tested. However, this report is based on my personal experience using the device in real-world scenarios, rather than solely on test results.
Additionally, I tested the battery life of the OnePlus Open by draining the phone as much as possible to record the battery percentage at the end of each day. I also took note of screen usage time and any other relevant data points.
During my testing, I also used various accessories with the OnePlus Open, such as the Android Auto system in my Honda vehicle. I have also tested it with other OnePlus devices from this year, including the OnePlus Buds Pro 2, OnePlus Pad, Google Pixel Buds Pro, and Xbox game controller.
