Today’s Apple event, which focused on the launch of new iPad Air and iPad Pro models, also featured several announcements related to artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Although there were no specific AI-related announcements related to the launch of either model, the company made several references to AI during the event, and these references included five new announcements related to AI technology.
In the past, Apple has been cautious about fully embracing the AI trend, preferring instead to focus on more technical terms such as “machine learning”. However, in February, CEO Tim Cook made a bold statement about AI, saying that it represents a significant opportunity for the company and that AI tools will be available on Apple devices this year.
So, what can we expect from Apple in terms of AI technology at WWDC 2024? Here are a few insights:
1. M4 Chip:
The new chip that will power the upcoming iPad models is reportedly more powerful than any other AI chip currently available for personal computers.
2. New AI Features:
Apple is reportedly working on several new AI features for its devices, such as improved voice recognition and translation capabilities.3. There have also been reports of a new camera system powered by artificial intelligence (AI) for the iPad Pro.
4. According to unconfirmed reports, Apple is working on an AI-powered assistant for its devices.
5. In addition, there have been hints that Apple may be developing a new type of AI chip for upcoming products.
Apple believes its silicon offers a solid foundation for AI applications. Millet noted that the Neural Engine is a specialized IP block on the chip designed to accelerate AI workloads and went on to say that it is more powerful than any other neural processing unit currently available on an AI computer. However, we are unable to confirm this claim at this time.
The Logic Pro 2 application features AI-driven session players, designed to enhance the user experience by analyzing audio and video content and providing personalized recommendations. This demonstrates Apple’s dedication to providing a seamless and customized experience.The Logic Pro app for the iPad was launched approximately one year ago, and the new version, announced by Apple, includes several AI-powered session players for users to explore. These players work in conjunction with the Drummer function to create a simulated band experience.
According to Will Hui, product manager for creative apps at Apple, “Drummer now has some new companions in the form of session players, including a bass player and keyboard player powered by AI, similar to Drummer.” Given that the iPad’s digital audio workstation has already been enjoyable, we are looking forward to exploring these new features.
This is accompanied by a new “adaptive” true tone flash that works with AI algorithms to adjust the lighting based on the document and ambient lighting. As John Ternus, senior vice president of Apple’s hardware engineering, noted, “we all know how challenging it can be to scan documents in certain lighting conditions. The new pro solves this issue by employing AI.”He added that the flash automatically detects documents such as forms and receipts, and uses artificial intelligence (AI) to take multiple photos with the new adaptive flash when shadows are present. These images are then combined to create a more accurate scan. We will see how well this feature works in practice when it is released, but as it is integrated into iPadOS, it will also be available in the Camera, Files, and Notes applications as well as third-party apps. The iPad Air will not be excluded from this AI revolution. Apple emphasized that the iPad Pro 2024 is not the only tablet in its lineup that is suitable for AI-powered tasks and future applications, even though it is the only model equipped with the new M4 processor. Melody Kuna, Director of iPad Product Design at Apple, stated that with the M2 processor, the new iPad Air is also a powerful device for machine learning on iPad OS.She added that the device is incredibly fast for features such as Visual Look Up, Subject Lift, and Live Text Capture. While the iPad Pro, with its M4 chip, is capable of performing an impressive 38 trillion operations per second, which is 60 times faster than the A11 Bionic Neural Engine in the iPhone 8. This means that the iPad Air 6 is not likely to be left behind when it comes to future AI-powered applications and features in the tablet line.
Lastly, during its launch event, Apple mentioned AI. However, this was only in the context of iPadOS. Will Hui, Product Manager for Creative Apps at Apple, stated that iPadOS includes advanced frameworks such as Core ML, which make it easier for developers to access neural engines and provide powerful AI capabilities directly on the device.It is clear that Apple has been prudent in its approach to the use of AI in its apps. So far, only two of its products, Logic Pro’s session players and the iPad Pro’s document scanning, have made significant use of AI. Nevertheless, the company has encouraged developers to investigate the potential of AI-powered features, and we can expect to learn more about this at WWDC 2024 next month.
