Notification improvements are also expected.

Android 15 could have a new screen feature to keep you doomscrolling in bed

Android 15 is due out later this year

We’re slowly hearing more and more about Android 15 and what features it will bring, including some that Google hasn’t announced yet, with new leaks pointing to changes to display settings and notification management.

Code digging by Android Authority’s Mishaal Rahman has revealed a new optional screen dimming setting. In theory, this will make it more comfortable to look at your phone in bed at night or in any particularly dark environment.

Android can already adapt screen brightness to ambient light levels, and there’s already an accessibility feature called “extra dim” that reduces glare from bright colors that can be toggled on and off.

The new “even dimmer” feature will be in addition to this and may be intended to be turned on permanently. According to the hidden code, this is “brightness expansion below the traditional range.” It’s supposed to work in tandem with adaptive brightness for those times when you’re in situations with very low ambient light.

Hiding notification channels

On the subject of notifications, we’re once again grateful to Mishaal Rahman of Android Authority for discovering a new setting for hiding unused notification channels, which should make it easier to manage the alerts you receive from your apps.

Currently on Android, apps can be configured to show some notifications but not others, so you might be wondering about WhatsApp calls but not WhatsApp messages, for example. However, the level of granularity of these options is partly up to the developers.

It looks like Android 15 will hide unused notification channels, so you won’t have to spend a lot of time scrolling through less important channels to find the notification setting you want. This isn’t a big change, but it does make life a little easier for users.

We also expect to see improvements to storage health checks, NFC wireless charging, and satellite messaging when Android 15 arrives—and you can try the beta now. Google will likely tell us a lot more about the upcoming software update at Google I/O 2024, which starts on May 14th.
