iPhone‘s pressable buttons may soon disappear

The iPhone 16 looks likely to ditch physical buttons after all

iPhone 15 (above) retains physical buttons

Before the release of the iPhone 15 Pro, it was widely speculated that it would feature capacitive volume and power buttons before Apple reportedly backtracked on its decision to include capacitive buttons on the iPhone 15 Pro due to time constraints. Then we heard that the iPhone 16 could feature an all-new capacitive button, known internally as the Capture button, while the rest of the phone’s buttons will remain physical.

Now, the latest data suggests that all four iPhone 16 buttons – the Action button, the power button, both volume buttons and the mysterious Capture button – will be capacitive on all four iPhone 16 models, and Apple is ready to ditch the traditional physical buttons . cross the border.

This advice comes from China’s Economic Daily (via AppleInsider), which reports that Apple’s longtime supply chain partner Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) has received a huge order to produce a number of iPhone 16 capacitive components.

AppleInsider notes that Apple’s internal codename for the capacitive transformation of all iPhone 16 buttons is “Project Bongo.” Previously, Project Atlas referred solely to the capacitive transformation of the Action button, so it seems that the company is finally moving forward with a full-scale transition to solid-state buttons.

Temper your expectations

The iPhone 16 looks likely to ditch physical buttons after all

The iPhone 16 will reportedly have a new button below the power button.

We’ll still take this rumor with a grain of salt. The Economic Daily claims that ASE is “expected to enter a major shipment phase in the third quarter,” but the iPhone 16 lineup is slated for release in September (i.e. very early in the fourth quarter), so the information is either incorrect or only applies to a specific capacitive component (for example, the Capture button).

So we’re pretty sure the iPhone 16 will have some kind of capacitive button, but we’re not ready to agree yet that every single button will be solid state. It could happen. Probably no. At the moment, only Apple knows this.

However, we’re more confident in knowing how these capacitive buttons will work. The Economic Daily reports that the iPhone 16 will feature dual Taptic Engines that will provide vibration feedback when you press any capacitive button, presumably similar to the Home button on the iPhone SE (2022) or the trackpads on top MacBooks.

Previous rumors have hinted at a single Taptic Engine powering the iPhone’s capacitive buttons, but whether it’s one or two, it seems clear that the level of feedback generated by those buttons will be familiar to longtime Apple fans.
